Edo State is finishing preparations to host the second Niger Delta Games, with organisers and the Niger Delta Development Commission saying facilities and athlete camps are ready for a week of competition from 20th – 27th February, 2026.
The NDDC said it has worked with Edo to upgrade key venues at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, including the Olympic-standard 50-metre pool and tennis courts, so the games will run smoothly.
“The Niger Delta Games will produce future Olympians,” the commission said in a statement about its support.
Organisers expect about 3,000 athletes and officials from the nine oil-producing states to attend.
Teams have opened training camps in Benin and across host communities as final selections and fitness work continue.
“The Team Edo camp has officially opened for athletes to fine-tune their preparations,” local officials said.
Edo’s sports officials praised the NDDC for backing the event.
“We are ready for the 2026 Niger Delta Games,” said Amadin Desmond Enabulele, chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, calling the festival a chance to harness young talents and boost unity.
Some participating states say they are focused on medals and good behaviour.
Delta State officials said they aim to correct mistakes from the first edition and push for top honours.
“Team Delta is optimistic of winning the crown,” their statement read.
Organisers also promise tighter rules to prevent cheating and banned athlete buying, and they hope the festival will leave lasting sports facilities and jobs.
With venues upgraded and teams in camp, the mood in Benin is one of quiet confidence as the region prepares for a week of sport and celebration.
