Education Minister Says 24 Nigerian Universities Make 2026 Global Rankings

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, says 24 Nigerian universities have been listed in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the country’s strongest performance so far.

Alausa said the figure is up from 21 institutions in previous rankings, making Nigeria the most represented country in Sub Saharan Africa.

According to him, 17 of the ranked institutions are federal universities, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen public higher education.

The minister congratulated institutions including the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos and Bayero University Kano, saying the recognition demonstrates the growing standard of Nigerian universities.

He added that improvements in research, innovation, digital transformation, quality assurance, infrastructure and governance have contributed to Nigeria’s rising global profile.

Alausa also disclosed that 27 additional Nigerian universities participated in the assessment, describing it as evidence of greater commitment to transparency, benchmarking and continuous improvement.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative aimed at improving universities and producing graduates equipped to drive national development.
