Education Minister Warns National Library Contractors Over Delays

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has warned contractors and consultants handling the National Library of Nigeria project that they will face sanctions if they fail to meet agreed timelines.

Alausa said the Nigerian facility would include spaces designed to improve accessibility and inclusion for children, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, girls and boys.

Attention would also be given to modern and ergonomic furniture.

The National Library project was conceived in 1981, while construction began in 2006 with an initial 24-month completion timeline.

It was expected to be completed in 2008 but remained unfinished for years.

Describing the library as a critical part of Nigeria’s education infrastructure and human capital development, Alausa said the prolonged delay could no longer be tolerated.

He added that the Ministry of Education would maintain oversight of the project and ensure contractors and consultants deliver according to agreed timelines, standards and value-for-money requirements.
