Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday alleged that security operatives attempted to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, shortly after his arrival from Cairo, Egypt.
El-Rufai said he declined to accompany the operatives because they failed to present a formal invitation or arrest warrant.
He also claimed that security agents seized his passport from an aide during the encounter.
“I refused to go with them because there was no official communication or legal basis for the action,” the former governor said, warning of what he described as increasing political intimidation.
The ex-governor, who recently defected from the All-Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleged that the incident reflects a broader pattern of pressure on opposition figures.
He claimed that some of his associates had been arrested and accused authorities of targeting politicians who refuse to remain in the ruling party.
El-Rufai warned that such actions could undermine democratic principles and political freedom, urging authorities to respect the rule of law.
As of press time, security agencies had yet to respond to the allegations.
