Ex-Army Spokesman Blames Multiple Factors for Renewed Terror Attacks

A retired army spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd) says recent spikes in terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s Northeast are driven by multiple factors, not operational lapses.

Usman said climate conditions, ongoing military offensives, and insurgents’ evolving tactics have contributed to the surge.

“These spikes are brought about by a number of factors, including weather and renewed efforts by troops to clear Boko Haram strongholds,” he said.

He explained that intensified operations in areas like Sambisa have dispersed fighters, pushing them to target vulnerable communities.

“They are now looking for opportunity targets,” he said.

Usman also blamed societal divisions and local support networks for sustaining insurgents.

“The population is a force multiplier for terrorists,” he said, adding that extremist groups rely on civilians for survival and recruitment.

He noted that links to international terror groups have increased pressure on insurgents to stage attacks.

On civilian casualties, including recent incidents, Usman said counter-insurgency operations are complex and require collective responsibility.

“It is not the army versus terrorists alone. It is a responsibility of the entire society and government,” he said.

He dismissed claims of deliberate targeting of civilians, noting that authorities have ordered investigations into such incidents.

“There is no way the armed forces will deliberately target innocent Nigerians,” he said.

Usman the Consultant Director, Corporate Affairs and Information at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre urged stronger collaboration between security agencies, government, and communities to curb terrorism.

“The solution goes beyond military action. Non-kinetic efforts like social and economic development are critical,” he added.
