The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Sunday clarified that no fire broke out at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, walking back an earlier advisory that had reported a fire incident at the facility.
FAAN said the scare that triggered the evacuation of passengers was instead caused by the accidental discharge of a FirePro fire suppression system installed in the terminal's equipment and generator rooms.
Director of Airport Operations, Captain Abdullahi Zubeir Mahmood, said the authority moved quickly once the alarm sounded.
"Emergency protocols were immediately activated to ensure the safety of passengers and staff," Mahmood said.
He explained that the system discharged unexpectedly even though there was no fire, smoke or excessive heat detected in the area.
"There was no fire, no smoke and no excessive heat," Mahmood said. "The system simply went off on its own."
Mahmood said FAAN is now investigating what set off the suppression system.
"Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the system activated automatically or was triggered manually," he said.
By Sunday, normal operations had resumed across the terminal, according to FAAN. Mahmood said only Virgin Atlantic recorded a brief disruption, affecting passenger check-in for the airline.
