The Federal Government has approved a 50% reduction in train fares nationwide to ease transportation costs for passengers during the Eid-el-Kabir period.
The intervention will take effect from May 26 to June 1, 2026, according to a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
The ministry said the initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens during the Sallah season, when intercity travel demand typically increases.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, said the subsidy applies to all routes operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, adding that passengers will pay only half of the approved fares within the period.
He also said passengers who had already purchased tickets at the original rates will receive a 50% rebate, which can be redeemed for future trips before expiry.
The ministry confirmed that train schedules and operational timetables remain unchanged and urged passengers to comply with travel guidelines and arrive early at stations to avoid congestion.
