Federal Government Welcomes IMF Review, Says Reforms Strengthening Economy

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, says the Federal Government has welcomed the International Monetary Fund’s 2026 Article IV assessment of Nigeria’s economy, describing it as a strong endorsement of ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu.

Oyedele said in a statement that the IMF report confirms that policy measures are improving macroeconomic stability, boosting investor confidence and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

“The IMF’s assessment provides independent validation that our reform programme is delivering results,” Oyedele said. “We are seeing stronger buffers, improved stability and renewed investor confidence.”

The IMF highlighted gains in foreign exchange operations, fiscal and revenue reforms, banking sector resilience and overall macroeconomic stability, saying Nigeria is better positioned to withstand external shocks.

Oyedele said key reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation and the end of deficit monetisation, have reduced vulnerabilities and strengthened the economy.

The IMF also noted that Nigeria has shown resilience despite global risks, including rising energy and food prices, with stable sovereign spreads and continued investor interest.

The minister said the government remains focused on expanding energy production, improving fiscal revenues and attracting new investments to drive growth.

He acknowledged concerns over poverty and food insecurity, stressing that economic gains must translate into improved living standards.

“We are committed to ensuring reforms deliver tangible benefits through jobs, social protection and inclusive growth,” Oyedele said.

The IMF projected growth above 4% in the medium term, alongside stronger reserves and improved fiscal performance.

Oyedele said the government will continue fiscal reforms, strengthen public financial management and pursue policies that support job creation and private sector growth.
