FG Files Treason Charges Over Alleged Coup Plot, Arraignment April 22

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge against six suspects over an alleged coup plot, accusing them of treason, terrorism and money laundering.

The accused include retired Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Gana, retired Capt. Erasmus Ochegobia, and serving officers Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani. Former Minister Timipre Sylva is listed as being at large.

In a charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the government alleged the defendants conspired in 2025 to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

They were accused of “conspiring with one another to levy war against the state,” as well as failing to report intelligence on an alleged planned treasonable act involving other suspects.

The prosecution also alleged terrorism-related offences under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, including participation in meetings linked to terrorism, support for terrorist activities, and failure to disclose security intelligence.

According to the charge, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim and Zekeri Umoru allegedly attended meetings tied to terrorist activities “in a bid to further a political ideology which may seriously destabilise the constitutional structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The defendants are also accused of handling suspected proceeds of crime. Bukar Goni is alleged to have retained N50 million linked to terrorism financing, while Abdulkadir Sani allegedly kept N2 million.

Zekeri Umoru is accused of receiving N10 million in cash outside financial channels and retaining another N8.8 million, while Inspector Ibrahim allegedly handled N1 million.

All financial counts were filed under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned on April 22 before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Defence Headquarters also said 16 military officers linked to related allegations will face a separate special court-martial.
