French health authorities say the country has recorded around 1,000 more deaths than expected during a severe heatwave that has affected much of western Europe in recent days.
Public Health France said in a statement that since June 24, approximately 1,000 additional deaths have been observed compared to typical monthly mortality figures, though it stressed the data remains preliminary.
The agency noted that areas placed under red heat alerts were the most affected, with about 85 percent of the deaths recorded among people aged 65 and above.
It added that the sharpest increase in fatalities occurred among people dying at home, particularly in the Île-de-France region, which includes Paris and its surrounding suburbs.
Health officials said the situation highlights the vulnerability of elderly and isolated individuals during extreme weather conditions and called for stronger community support systems.
The heatwave, which pushed temperatures above 40°C in parts of France, began to ease on Sunday after several days of intense heat across the region.
