The government of Ghana has summoned the envoy of South Africa following a series of reported xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the move comes amid growing concerns over the safety of Ghanaian citizens residing in South Africa.
The ministry cited multiple cases of harassment, including an incident in KwaZulu-Natal where a legally resident Ghanaian was allegedly confronted and told to return home and “fix his country.”
In a statement, Ghana warned of “escalating tensions,” advising its nationals in South Africa to remain indoors for their safety as disturbing videos of harassment circulate online.
During a meeting with South Africa’s acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, Ablakwa stressed that such actions undermine the long-standing principles of African unity and solidarity.
He also highlighted Ghana’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle, describing the reported attacks as unjustified.
South Africa, Africa’s most industrialised economy, has long attracted migrants from across the continent.
However, with unemployment exceeding 30 percent, the country has experienced recurring waves of anti-immigrant sentiment, sometimes resulting in violence.
Official statistics from 2022 indicate that about 2.4 million foreign-born individuals live in South Africa, representing roughly four percent of the population.
Ghana’s government has called for swift action to address the situation and ensure the protection of all foreign nationals within South Africa.
