Gunmen attacked a secondary school in Kogi State on Tuesday evening, abducting the principal, a National Examinations Council ad-hoc staff member and four students during ongoing NECO examinations.
The attackers struck Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area at about 5:25 p.m., sending panic through the school and surrounding community, police said.
A combined team of police and other security agencies launched a search-and-rescue operation shortly after the attack. The team is pursuing the assailants in an effort to free the victims and arrest those responsible.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat confirmed the incident in a statement issued Wednesday.
She said one of the abducted students has been rescued, while operations to secure the release of the remaining victims are ongoing.
"So far, one of the abducted students has been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the arrest of the perpetrators," Afusat said.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the school principal, the NECO staff member, or the students still being held, nor confirmed the number of attackers involved. The Kogi State Police Command said further updates will be issued as the operation progresses.
