Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has presented his manifesto, outlining his vision and priorities as he seeks to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Hamzat said his focus would be to sustain the state's progress, address areas requiring more attention and create opportunities for every Lagosian to thrive.
He traced his commitment to public service to his upbringing and family background, recalling how his father served in the Lagos State House of Assembly before becoming commissioner for public transportation between 1979 and 1983.
Hamzat also recalled meeting the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a 14-year-old student during a campaign visit to his school, saying the encounter left a lasting impression on his understanding of leadership and public service.
The deputy governor, who grew up in Mushin, said his experiences in the community taught him the importance of clear drainage during the rainy season and reliable electricity for traders.
He said his work in government included helping to develop Lagos' digital map and residents' register, adding that effective governance depends on understanding the people it serves.
On infrastructure, Hamzat pledged to complete and connect the state's rail lines, improve road and water transportation, expand access to affordable housing, strengthen security and upgrade healthcare across the 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
He also listed education, skills development and job creation among his priorities, promising to equip young people with relevant knowledge and practical skills, support entrepreneurs and small businesses, and expand access to economic opportunities.
Hamzat said his plans would also focus on better waste management, flood prevention, improved drainage and the protection of coastal communities, alongside responsible governance and effective management of public resources.
He said the goal was to build a Lagos that is safer, more accessible, prosperous and inclusive, with residents at the centre of government decisions.
At the presentation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat's loyalty and contributions to their administration, recalling that he agreed to become his running mate five weeks after party leaders asked him to step aside.
Sanwo-Olu said Hamzat had been involved in key decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the October 2020 crisis and the development of the state's rail infrastructure.
The governor also said Hamzat had remained loyal throughout their time in office, adding that their working relationship had not been marked by the political disagreements that have affected some governors and their deputies.
Hamzat has served as Lagos deputy governor since 2019.
