The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says two Alpha Jet pilots displayed “exceptional courage and professionalism” after safely ejecting during an in-flight emergency at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kainji, Niger State, on Saturday, 6 December 2025.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, in a statement said the incident occurred shortly after take-off during a post-inspection functional check flight.

The aircraft reportedly developed a sudden emergency, forcing the pilots to take swift action.

NAF said the pilots skilfully steered the jet away from residential areas before ejecting a move the service described as a demonstration of discipline and sound judgement. Both officers were rescued and are currently undergoing routine medical evaluation.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the crew for averting what could have been a major tragedy.

“Their bravery and professionalism prevented loss of life and reflect the high standards we expect of our personnel,” he said, while ordering the immediate formation of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the malfunction.

The Air Force assured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining strict safety protocols and ensuring the welfare of its personnel.

“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement added.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
