IGP Disu Bans Unauthorised Social Media Activities by Police Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has directed police personnel to stop unauthorised social media activities that could affect the integrity and public image of the Nigeria Police Force.

The directive follows concerns over officers creating videos, hosting live sessions and sharing content online while in uniform or presenting themselves as members of the Force without approval.

The IGP said social media remains a tool for communication but must be used in line with police regulations and the Force’s social media policy.

He warned officers against sharing sensitive operational information, making unauthorised comments on police matters, or using their position for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.

Commissioners of Police, heads of departments and other senior officers have been directed to sensitise personnel and ensure compliance, with supervisors to be held responsible for failure to act on violations.

The Force Intelligence Department and the Professional Standards Department have also been tasked with monitoring social media platforms and identifying officers who breach professional standards.

The Nigeria Police Force says the directive is aimed at strengthening discipline, professionalism and responsible communication while maintaining public trust.
