IGP Kayode Egbetokun Resigns

The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has resigned as the Inspector-General of Police, citing family issues that require his full attention.

Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said, “The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention.”

However, multiple sources say Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday evening.

Egbetokun, appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, faced growing criticism over nationwide insecurity, including kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and mass killings in several states.

A Presidency source added, “It was in that meeting he was asked to go.

It wasn’t a routine visit.”

Preparations are reportedly underway for his replacement, with a formal handover expected soon.

Egbetokun had previously served as Deputy IGP in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and succeeded Usman Alkali Baba in 2023.

The Presidency says an official statement will be issued later.
