At least 13 people have died after a speeding truck ploughed into a crowd of Hindu devotees at a festival in Gwalior, in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, officials said Sunday.
The heavily loaded truck reportedly lost control in the early hours and struck worshippers gathered near a temple. The number of injured was not immediately available.
President Droupadi Murmu described the deaths as “heartbreaking” and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
“I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” she said in a social media post.
The crash comes amid persistent road safety concerns in India, which recorded more than 183,000 road traffic deaths in 2025, according to the country’s roads ministry.
Officials have linked many crashes to poor road infrastructure, poorly maintained vehicles and driver fatigue.
