The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election has been largely peaceful despite network-related challenges affecting voter accreditation in some polling units.
Speaking while monitoring the election in Okitipupa on Saturday, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, said most polling units opened on schedule, with electoral officials arriving early to begin the exercise.
He noted that some polling units were fully operational before 8:00 a.m., reflecting the commission's preparedness for the election.
Agboke said security personnel had been deployed across the six local government areas participating in the by-election, adding that no security incidents or casualties had been recorded.
He acknowledged reports of network difficulties affecting voter accreditation in some locations but said INEC's technical team was working to resolve the issue.
The REC added that it was too early to assess voter turnout, noting that the commission would rely on data from its monitoring dashboard before making any conclusions.
Meanwhile, INEC National Commissioner Kunle Ajayi said polling unit results would be uploaded electronically to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) after votes are counted and result sheets completed.
Ajayi clarified that while IReV displays uploaded polling unit result sheets, the final outcome of the election would be determined through the official collation process.
The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacant Ondo South Senatorial seat following the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
