INEC Meets Parties, Defends Appeal Over Court Ruling on Primary Timelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has met with leaders of political parties to review preparations for the Ekiti governorship election scheduled for June 20, 2026, as part of its final consultations ahead of the poll.

The meeting, held in Abuja, is one of several engagements aimed at ensuring smooth coordination between the electoral body and political stakeholders ahead of the election, which is just 11 days away.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, alongside national commissioners, used the session to defend its decision to appeal a recent court ruling concerning its powers to set timelines for political party primaries and pre-election activities.

INEC argued that the judgment, which upheld its authority to issue election timetables but restricted its control over party primary deadlines, was inconsistent and required a clearer judicial interpretation.

The commission has also filed a motion seeking a stay of execution of the High Court ruling delivered on May 20, 2026, pending the outcome of its appeal at the Court of Appeal.

INEC maintained that a definitive ruling is necessary to avoid confusion in the electoral process and to ensure proper legal clarity ahead of future elections.

The meeting also served as a platform for political parties to raise concerns and align on logistics as preparations enter the final stage before the Ekiti governorship poll.
