The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is reviewing its Preliminary Register of Voters following concerns over suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs in the document, ahead of the final certification of the register on December 15, 2026.
The Commission clarified that the register published on its website on October 26 is not the final certified version and remains subject to verification, scrutiny and correction.
In a statement, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the online publication contains the same preliminary register that was physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, during the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
Haruna disclosed that some questionable registration records had been identified and flagged for further investigation during the physical display exercise.
He said the Commission had commenced a review to address identified irregularities in line with established procedures. INEC is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses that may have contributed to their appearance in the register.
The Commission acknowledged citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns about the photographs, saying public scrutiny would help improve the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register.
INEC assured Nigerians that verified irregularities would be addressed and that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
The Commission said it would complete the necessary verification and data-cleanup processes before certifying the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
The review comes as INEC works to ensure that the register used for elections accurately reflects eligible voters and meets the required standards before final certification.
