The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun a capacity-building workshop for its Public Affairs Officers, focusing on credible, verified and responsible election communication ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The workshop, themed “Strengthening PAOs Capacity for Credible, Verified and Responsible Election Communication Towards 2027,” is designed to equip the officers with practical skills to engage the media, respond to emerging information challenges and support INEC’s communication efforts at the state level.
Declaring the workshop open, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, described Public Affairs Officers as frontline communicators who serve as a link between the commission and the public.
Haruna said the credibility of INEC’s communication depends significantly on the quality and accuracy of the work carried out by its public affairs personnel.
He said the communication environment has become more complex with the growth of social media and the emergence of generative artificial intelligence.
Haruna said the workshop would help communication officers identify, verify and appropriately respond to misinformation and disinformation as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
He also referenced recent remarks by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, at the 13th Annual International Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, where he stressed the connection between electoral technology and electoral communication in ensuring election credibility.
