FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the 2026 World Cup, accusing critics of spreading “hate and false rumours” about the tournament.
In an open letter published eight days after the competition ended, Infantino said the tournament delivered “joy and happiness” and recorded no violence or major security incidents.
The FIFA president addressed concerns raised over ticket prices, visa restrictions, political tensions and refereeing decisions, saying the organisation worked to make the tournament a success.
Infantino also defended FIFA’s handling of visa issues involving some countries, including Iran, saying football should promote peace and unity rather than politics.
His comments came after criticism from some teams and officials, including Iran’s coach, who described his team’s experience at the tournament as unfair.
Infantino also rejected complaints over disciplinary and refereeing decisions, saying controversial calls are common in major football leagues around the world.
