Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has launched missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, escalating tensions after fresh American strikes on Iran.
The IRGC said the operation was in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iran following alleged Iranian strikes on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
It claimed to have targeted Bahrain’s Fifth Naval District at Bandar Salman and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, while also claiming to have downed a U.S. drone.
The claims have not been independently verified. Authorities in Bahrain and Kuwait confirmed that air defence systems were activated after air raid sirens sounded, with Kuwait’s military saying it was responding to “hostile” missile and drone threats.
The latest attacks came hours after the United States launched a new wave of strikes against Iran, with Washington saying the action was in response to attacks on three commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
The U.S. Central Command said more than 60 Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats were among targets hit during the operation, describing Iran’s actions as a violation of the ceasefire and a threat to freedom of navigation.
The renewed hostilities have pushed up global oil prices, with Brent crude rising above $70 per barrel as markets reacted to heightened geopolitical risks.
The escalation threatens a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, which had been expected to provide a window for indirect negotiations on a wider agreement.
