Iraq Declares Three Days of Mourning After Death of Iran’s Supreme Leader

The Iraqi government has declared three days of national mourning following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The country described his killing as a violation of international law and human values.

In a statement issued Sunday, Iraqi government spokesperson Basem Al-Awadi expressed condolences to the people of Iran and the global Muslim community, referring to Khamenei as a religious scholar and leader who devoted his life to defending his nation and supporting causes across the Muslim world.

The Iraqi government condemned what it called a “blatant act of aggression,” saying the incident breached international laws and conventions and risked further destabilising the Middle East.

Baghdad also renewed its call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of military operations in the region, warning that continued escalation could push the Middle East toward unprecedented levels of violence and threaten global peace and security.

The statement said the period of national mourning would be observed across Iraq in honour of Khamenei and others killed amid the ongoing conflict.

Iraqi authorities urged all parties involved to return to dialogue and diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of regional stability.
