Iwobi Joins 100-Cap Club, Reflects on Loyalty to Nigeria

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi reached a major milestone in his international career, earning his 100th cap for Nigeria in the 2-1 friendly defeat to Portugal.

The Fulham star becomes one of a select group of Nigerian players to hit the century mark, joining legends such as Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa.

Iwobi, who made his debut for Nigeria in October 2015, reaches the landmark over a decade after his first appearance and continues to play a key role in the national team setup.

The 30-year-old, who is also the nephew of Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha, has long been seen as part of a footballing lineage, with his style of play often drawing comparisons to his illustrious uncle.

Ahead of the milestone, Iwobi expressed pride in representing Nigeria, stating that he has no regrets choosing the country over England at the international level.

“I am proud to wear the green and white. After all these years, I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles, and I have no regrets,” he said.

Iwobi has featured at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and was part of the squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with one of his most memorable moments coming when he scored the decisive goal against Zambia to secure Nigeria’s qualification.

Despite reaching the 100-cap milestone, he admitted he would have preferred to celebrate it at a major tournament, particularly the FIFA World Cup.

Iwobi’s achievement highlights his consistency, longevity, and commitment, as he continues to play a central role in Nigeria’s midfield.
