The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that candidates are not required to remove their hijabs during registration, following concerns over a viral video from Afe Babalola University (ABUAD).
The video showed a candidate allegedly being told to remove her hijab for a biometric photo.
JAMB explained the request was a standard procedure to ensure both ears are visible for accurate facial recognition, similar to passport or visa captures, and emphasized it respects candidates’ religious beliefs.
“She was requested to formally state in writing that she chose not to comply with the guideline regarding ear visibility. She obliged and was successfully captured,” the board said.
JAMB urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation, stressing that the hijab policy is purely technical and does not constitute discrimination.
Registration for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) runs until February 28, with e-PIN sales closing February 26. Direct Entry registration opens March 2 and ends April 25 at zonal and state offices.
