Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as false a report alleging he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election to split votes in the South-South region.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Jonathan's Special Adviser on Media, Ikechukwu Eze, described the publication as "entirely false and baseless," urging Nigerians to ignore the claim.
Eze said the report, which he attributed to a little-known website, falsely claimed Jonathan disclosed that he had been offered ₦500 billion to challenge Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, the publication failed to meet basic journalistic standards because it did not indicate where or when Jonathan allegedly made the statement, who was present, or who supposedly made the offer.
"The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer," Eze said.
He added that the publication bore "all the hallmarks of fake news" deliberately designed to mislead the public and drag the former president into unnecessary political controversy.
While noting that election periods often witness an increase in misinformation and false attributions, Eze advised Nigerians to disregard the report entirely and verify sensational political claims before sharing them.
