The Kano State Government has disputed figures released by the Federal Ministry of Health indicating that the state recorded 6,106 new HIV infections in 2025, insisting that the actual figure is 4,680.
The federal report stated that Nigeria recorded 102,025 new HIV infections across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with Kano accounting for 6,106 cases.
Speaking on the development, the Director-General of the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr Usman Bashir, said the state recorded 730 new HIV cases in the first quarter of 2025.
He explained that the rise in detected cases reflects expanded HIV testing rather than an increase in transmission.
“What we are seeing is improved case detection as more people are accessing HIV testing services. Increased testing means more people can know their status and begin treatment early,” he said.
Dr Bashir disclosed that 42,157 people living with HIV are currently receiving treatment across Kano, adding that HIV testing and treatment remain free under the state’s programme.
He urged residents to take advantage of the free services by getting tested regularly.
“Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are key to controlling HIV, reducing transmission and helping people live healthy, productive lives,” he said.
