The Kano State government says it is working to establish a commission for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), a move it says is in line with its commitment to disability inclusion following the Global Disability Summit.
The State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this, saying “the commission will be responsible for policy coordination, advocacy, and enforcement of disability rights under the state’s disability law.”
Comrade Waiya stressed the commission will promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, adding that “the initiative aims to ensure accessibility in education, healthcare, and infrastructure for PWDs.”
The announcement comes on the heels of renewed national advocacy for the full implementation of the resolutions of the Global Disability Summit 2025.
The President of the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN), Dr. Bisi Bamishe, called on governments at all levels to take concrete steps to fulfil the summit’s commitments.
She said, “The Global Disability Summit is not just a talking point. It’s a call to action. States like Kano must lead by example in implementing inclusive policies.”
Also speaking during her welcome address, the Vice President of AAN, Hajia Mariya Ishaaka, said the albinism community was being neglected.
She stressed that once established, “The commission will address their plight in the state.”
The Global Disability Summit 2025, held earlier this year, brought together global leaders and advocates to advance the rights of over one billion persons with disabilities worldwide, with Nigeria among the signatories to key resolutions.
