The Kogi State Government has ordered security agencies to investigate the killing of a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Samuel Opeyemi, and bring those responsible to justice.
The priest, who served at St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, was killed on July 29, 2026, in an incident the state government described as a “heinous and unacceptable act.”
In a statement issued on Friday in Lokoja, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo had directed security agencies to identify the masterminds behind the attack and ensure they face prosecution.
Fanwo expressed the government’s condolences to the Catholic Church, the diocese, the family of the deceased and the wider Christian community.
He said authorities are expected to conduct a thorough and professional investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and uncover all those connected to the crime.
The state government also urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist security agencies, while warning against the spread of unverified reports that could affect the investigation.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, saying it would continue to support security agencies in strengthening safety across Kogi State.
