The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will honour his pledge to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the remarks during a recent interview on News Central where he addressed concerns over whether Obi would keep his promise or seek a second term after completing four years in office.
He said Obi had made the commitment publicly and there was no reason for Nigerians to doubt his sincerity.
"I personally believe Peter Obi is a gentleman and I have every reason to trust him, especially that he said it to the hearing of everybody. Nobody should have any reason to doubt him," Kwankwaso said.
According to the former Kano State governor, the agreement within the NDC coalition is based on mutual trust among its members.
He argued that allowing the South to complete an eight-year tenure is consistent with the understanding reached by the coalition, adding that no leader should renege on a promise made openly before Nigerians.
Kwankwaso also said the coalition's focus extends beyond the 2027 election, noting that members have jointly developed short, medium and long-term plans for the country.
He explained that the alliance is committed to ensuring that whoever eventually leads the government implements the agreed agenda rather than pursuing personal or sectional interests.
He added that the coalition would work to ensure continuity of its programmes regardless of who occupies the presidency in the future, saying the shared roadmap is designed to deliver long-term development and strengthen governance across the country.
