Kwankwaso Set for ADC Defection

The national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday in a major political move ahead of the 2027 general election.

Party officials in the ADC and NNPP said the former Kano State governor would formally declare for the ADC in Kano.

He is expected to be received by the party’s national chairman, David Mark, and national secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.

Kwankwaso is expected to join the party with the former deputy governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who resigned from that office on Friday.

Party insiders said the ADC had been in talks with Kwankwaso for several months, with discussions reportedly including the vice-presidential slot in the 2027 election.

The leader of the Kwankwasiya Movement had also reportedly explored a potential alliance with the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo believed to support the alliance discussions.

Kwankwaso’s planned defection comes two months after the Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, defected from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing with him members of the state House of Assembly and his cabinet.

ADC's Big Plans

The ADC is also said to be in alliance talks with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and some members of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of efforts to build a stronger opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reacting to the planned move, the APC said Kwankwaso’s defection does not pose a political threat to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election, noting that he is free to join any political party of his choice.
