The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised the worsening security situation and economic hardship facing Nigerians, saying citizens are “bleeding” under current policies.
In a Sallah message issued on Wednesday and signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union said workers and the poor are struggling under what it described as harsh economic reforms.
The labour body said millions of Nigerians are experiencing deepening poverty and urged political leaders to reflect on the impact of their policy decisions.
It called for stronger government action to address rising insecurity across the country, including kidnappings, bandit attacks and communal violence.
The NLC also urged Nigerians to use the Eid-el-Kabir period not only for prayers and celebration, but also for political awareness and grassroots mobilisation.
According to the union, governance should prioritise the welfare of citizens by ensuring access to food, shelter, healthcare, education and decent jobs.
It said insecurity and economic hardship have combined to worsen living conditions nationwide, describing the situation as a failure of governance.
The statement also criticised what it called excessive public spending by political office holders while citizens are being asked to endure economic sacrifices.
The labour union said it would continue to hold leaders accountable, warning that Nigerians would remember unfulfilled promises and policies that have worsened poverty.
It added that the next election cycle could serve as an opportunity for citizens to demand better leadership through the ballot.
