Labour Party Elects Nenadi Usman as First Female National Chairman

The Labour Party has elected Nenadi Usman as its national chairman, making her the first woman to lead a major political party in Nigeria.

Usman was elected at the party’s national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, marking a significant milestone in the party’s leadership.

Her emergence follows a prolonged leadership crisis within the party, which was eventually resolved in her favour by the Court of Appeal.

Before the convention, she had been recognised as chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee by the Independent National Electoral Commission, following a Federal High Court judgment delivered on January 21, 2026.

Usman, a former minister of finance and senator, is expected to lead the party into the 2027 general elections, with a focus on strengthening its structure and electoral performance.
