Labour Party Petitions Police, DSS Over Alleged Illegal Sale Of Nomination Forms

The Labour Party has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services over the alleged unauthorised sale of nomination forms by former national chairman, Julius Abure.

The party’s national chairman, Nenadi Usman, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Thursday during the screening of aspirants ahead of the party’s primaries in Abuja.

Usman said copies of the petitions had also been forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisting that the forms allegedly being circulated by Abure were not authorised by the current leadership of the party.

According to her, the leadership that emerged from the party’s convention in Umuahia remains the recognised leadership of the Labour Party.

“We received the news surprisingly. After the court said his tenure was over, we went to Umuahia, held a national convention and elected new leaders. INEC was there and recognised what we did,” she said.

Usman also stated that the party had not been served with any notice regarding an alleged appeal filed by Abure at the Supreme Court over the leadership dispute.

She maintained that the apex court was likely to uphold its earlier position on the matter.

The LP chairman further alleged that some aspirants had been deceived into purchasing fake nomination forms.

“One man came here to tell me his wife was contesting, and when I looked at the form, it was not the form we issued. They are deceiving people, and it is not right,” she said.

Speaking on preparations for the 2027 general elections, Usman expressed confidence in the strength of the party, noting that several aspirants had already shown interest in contesting on the LP platform.

She revealed that three aspirants had so far purchased the party’s presidential nomination forms.

Usman also reiterated the party’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, warning northern aspirants against purchasing the forms.

“We have decided that our next candidate or flag bearer should come from the South. Anybody from the North who wants to buy forms should not even bother,” she said.

She added that the party was considering a consensus arrangement ahead of the primaries, while assuring members that the process would be transparent and credible.
