Labour Party Youth Leaders Propose Talks With APC, Tinubu Support Groups

Youth leaders within the Labour Party have proposed opening consultations with the ruling All Progressives Congress and groups supporting President Bola Tinubu over a possible political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections

The proposal followed a virtual meeting held on Oct. 2 involving Labour Party National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, members of the national youth leadership, five national zonal youth leaders and 32 state youth leaders. A statement on the meeting was signed by Edo State Youth Leader Ken Omusi.

According to the statement, the meeting focused on the party’s political direction amid what participants described as a prolonged crisis within the Labour Party and concerns about the future of youth participation in national governance.

The youth leaders expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as inadequate recognition, engagement and support for the party’s youth constituency during and after the 2023 general elections.

They also discussed the need for a political platform that would provide greater opportunities for young people in leadership, economic empowerment and national decision-making.

The participants reviewed policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration in areas including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, health care, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

The statement said the youth leaders expressed varying views on the administration’s policies and their implications for Nigeria’s development.

Following the discussions, the group called on Ahanotu to begin consultations with stakeholders in the APC, Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups to explore the possibility of political alignment and collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The youth leaders also expressed confidence in Ahanotu’s leadership and mandated him to facilitate the consultations, while stressing the need for broad-based discussions and consensus among the youth leadership.

The proposal does not amount to a concluded alliance, with the participants planning to review the outcome of the consultations before determining their next steps. They also proposed a physical meeting of Labour Party youth leaders in Abuja to consider the outcome of the discussions.

The development comes amid continuing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. The proposed engagement, according to the statement, is intended to examine political participation, strategic partnerships and the role of young Nigerians in national governance.
