Lagos 2027: Hamzat Begins Consultations With GAC

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has initiated early political consultations with the state’s powerful Governance Advisory Council (GAC), fuelling speculation over the 2027 governorship race.

Hamzat disclosed in a post on X that he met with members of the influential council on Monday, describing the engagement as part of ongoing discussions on the future of Lagos.

“I had thoughtful conversations about the future of Lagos and the kind of leadership it requires. I value the experience and guidance shared, this is about listening, learning and working with others to build a stronger Lagos,” he wrote.

The move has drawn renewed attention to succession politics within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where internal consultations and stakeholder alignments often shape candidate emergence long before party primaries.

The GAC, a key decision-making bloc in Lagos APC politics, is led by Tajudeen Olusi and includes prominent figures such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oluremi Tinubu.

The council plays a critical role in strategic decisions, including succession planning, zoning and endorsements within the party.

Observers say Hamzat’s engagement reflects a familiar pattern in Lagos politics, where aspirants begin consultations with key stakeholders years ahead of elections.

Meanwhile, reactions on social media have begun to interpret the meeting as a possible endorsement, although no official position has been announced.

Unverified claims circulating online suggest that consensus may already be forming within the party, with reports alleging that some GAC members expressed strong support for Hamzat’s potential candidacy.

However, there has been no confirmation from the council or the APC regarding any endorsement ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
