Lagos APC Picks Sonayon-James as Hamzat's Running Mate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has selected Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James as the deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sonayon-James, who hails from Badagry, will run alongside Dr. Obafemi Hamzat on the party’s ticket.

Her emergence has drawn reactions within party circles and among residents, particularly in Badagry, where some stakeholders view the choice as a political recognition of the area’s long-standing involvement in Lagos politics.

Sonayon-James currently serves as the APC Deputy State Woman Leader in Lagos and has held various party and local government roles over the years. She previously served as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

She has also held positions within the party structure, rising from State Assistant Woman Leader to her current role in the state executive.

Before her full-time political engagement, she worked across human resources, logistics, and business management. She is also the Chief Executive Officer of DGS Chauffeurs & Logistics.

Academically, she holds a degree in Business and Human Resources Management from the University of Hull, United Kingdom, and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

While the APC has not issued a detailed formal statement outlining the rationale behind the selection, the announcement has already begun shaping early political conversations in Lagos, particularly within Badagry and party structures across the state.
