The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 percent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit and standard bus routes.
Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu granted the approval after regulated public transport operators raised concerns about rising operational costs and the sustainability of services.
The state government says the new fare structure will take effect from March 2, 2026.
Officials explain that the adjustment is in line with the annual fare review mechanism and is aimed at cushioning the impact of ongoing economic pressures.
Authorities say inflation, which closed 2025 at 15.2 percent according to the National Bureau of Statistics, has significantly affected transport operations.
Bus Operating Companies have also faced increased costs for vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries, especially following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
Operators are said to be investing in newer, cleaner and more fuel efficient buses to improve passenger comfort and support environmental sustainability.
The government has however reassured commuters of its commitment to balancing affordability with safe, reliable and efficient public transportation across the state.
