Lagos Begins Removal of Illegal Structures Along Badagry Expressway Rail Corridor

The Lagos State Government has begun removing illegal structures and traders occupying the median of the Lagos–Okokomaiko–Badagry Expressway, saying the area is reserved for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development after inspecting the ongoing enforcement exercise alongside officials from the Ministry of the Environment, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Wahab said the expressway is a major gateway into Nigeria from other West African countries and plays a strategic economic role, making it unacceptable for public infrastructure built with taxpayers' funds to be occupied by unauthorized traders and structures.

He said the state government would sustain enforcement and regular monitoring along the corridor to prevent a return of illegal occupants.

According to the commissioner, a permanent patrol team will be deployed to preserve the integrity of the corridor and ensure the infrastructure serves its intended purpose.
