The Lagos State Government has sealed off the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market, along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway), in Mushin due to repeated environmental violations.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, said taskforce operatives carried out the enforcement action as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to uphold environmental laws and promote cleanliness.
Posting on X, Wahab noted that the closure was prompted by indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median and along the highway, illegal street trading, and other practices that, in the government’s view, undermine environmental and public health standards.
“Lagos State government, this morning, sealed Ladipo Spare Parts Market along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) over repeated environmental infractions; indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median/highway and illegal street trading,” he wrote.
The Mushin market, a major hub for automotive spare parts traders, has faced sanctions in the past for similar breaches.
The action reflects the state’s “zero tolerance” enforcement policy aimed at discouraging unsanitary practices, ensuring compliance with environmental laws, and improving the overall sanitation of public spaces.
In 2023, the Lagos government briefly reopened Ladipo Market after traders complied with waste management and sanitation requirements.
At that time, officials emphasised the administration’s commitment to a cleaner and healthier city under the THEMES Plus development agenda.
The current sealing underscores renewed enforcement efforts amid ongoing concerns over compliance.
No official timeframe has been given for when the market might reopen, but authorities have indicated that full adherence to regulatory standards will be required before operations can resume.
