The Lagos State government has inducted 150 newly trained firefighters and commissioned the Oworonshoki Fire Station, expanding the state's emergency response capacity as authorities seek to improve public safety and disaster preparedness.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening fire and rescue services during the induction ceremony, where the new recruits formally joined the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service after completing six months of intensive training.
The firefighters underwent practical and classroom instruction at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Technical Training Centre in Ikeja, earning the Basic Firefighting Competency Certificate, which qualifies them for operational deployment across the state.
Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, urged the new officers to uphold discipline, professionalism and teamwork as they begin field operations, describing firefighting as a demanding profession that requires continuous learning and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property.
Adeseye said the latest intake is the third phase of firefighter recruitment under the Sanwo-Olu administration.
She noted that 100 firefighters were recruited in 2020, followed by 435 personnel in 2022, bringing the total number recruited since the governor assumed office to 685.
She also said the commencement of operations at the Oworonshoki Fire Station raises the number of public fire stations built under the current administration to 11, alongside another station operating through a public-private partnership.
According to Adeseye, the expansion of fire stations, recruitment of additional personnel and investment in modern firefighting equipment reflect the state's efforts to improve emergency response and build a more resilient Lagos.
She assured residents that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service would continue to provide prompt and efficient emergency services while strengthening the protection of lives, property and the environment across the state.
