Lagos Sets Clear Sanitation Rules for Residents Ahead of Monthly Exercise

If you live in Lagos, there’s a fresh reminder on how to keep your environment clean

The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has rolled out detailed responsibilities for residents ahead of the monthly sanitation exercise.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab says landlords must take the lead — organize cleanups, clear drains, provide waste bins, and make sure everyone in the building participates.

Tenants are not left out.

They’re expected to clean their surroundings, sort waste properly, and avoid dumping refuse in gutters or public spaces.

Business owners also have a role to play — clean both their shops and nearby areas, and ensure waste is ready for collection before the exercise ends.

Meanwhile, markets, schools, hospitals, and places of worship are to appoint sanitation coordinators, while hazardous waste must be handled by licensed operators under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.

Community leaders and associations are also being called on to coordinate shared spaces and work closely with Lagos Waste Management Authority to manage waste collection.

The state government says it’s all part of efforts to keep Lagos cleaner and more organized under its ongoing environmental campaign
