The Lagos State Government has announced the suspension of all reclamation projects in the state with immediate effect.
In a press release on Thursday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab revealed the suspension takes effect immediately.
According to him, environmental risks necessitated the decision with the state's "low-lying topography and fragile ecosystem" susceptible to the grave consequences posed by reclamation activities.
The directive read: “The ministry is by this notice directing all reclamation projects across the state, with or without EIA approval and drainage clearance, to be suspended immediately.
“All approved Reclamation Projects across the State must be submitted for proper documentation and monitoring, while all ongoing and intending ones must be subjected to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process with issuance of approval letter and drainage clearance from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.”
Wahab also warned that defaulters of the directive would face consequences.
“Enough is enough," said the commissioner, noting that strict actions would include arrests and decommissioning of sites for wrongdoers who fail to comply within seven days.
The affected areas, as disclosed by Wahab include: Victoria Island Extension, Lekki, Ajah, Parkview, Banana Island, Osborne, Ikoyi, Ikorodu and parts of Oworonshoki.
