The Lagos State Government has launched disciplinary proceedings against an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), over allegations that he accepted a ₦20,000 bribe from a suspected environmental offender.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the officer had been issued a formal query, while a Personnel Management Board would be constituted to investigate the allegation in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
The move follows a viral video showing a KAI officer, dressed in the agency’s green uniform, allegedly collecting cash from a man inside what appeared to be a Black Maria enforcement vehicle.
Describing the alleged conduct as unacceptable, Wahab said it violated the ethics and core values of the agency.
“The Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and any form of misconduct within its public service".
Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures as provided by the relevant regulations,” he said.
The commissioner also stressed that offering a bribe is as unlawful as receiving one, urging residents to obey the law and avoid attempting to compromise enforcement officers.
LAGESC, established in 2017, is responsible for enforcing environmental sanitation, traffic and public order regulations across the state.
Its officers routinely arrest environmental offenders, street traders, illegal hawkers and others who violate sanitation and public order laws before they are prosecuted in mobile courts.
