Lagos Warns Businesses Against ‘No Refund, No Return’ Policies

The Lagos State Government has warned businesses operating in the state against enforcing “No Return, No Refund, No Replacement” and “No Cancellation After Payment” policies, saying such conditions cannot override consumers’ rights under the law.

The warning was issued by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), which said businesses have the right to set terms and conditions but must not use them to deny customers their legal protections.

LASCOPA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Afolabi Solebo, said consumers are entitled to fair treatment, especially when goods are defective, unsafe, falsely described, or unsuitable for the purpose communicated to the seller before purchase.

He said, “Consumer rights are protected by law, and businesses must operate responsibly and fairly. We encourage consumers to know their rights and report any violations to LASCOPA for prompt intervention.”

Solebo described blanket policies that deny consumers lawful remedies as unfair, misleading, and unenforceable, urging businesses to adopt transparent and consumer-friendly return, refund, replacement, and cancellation policies.

He also advised Lagos residents to inspect goods before purchase where possible, keep receipts and proof of payment, and report cases involving unfair trade practices or denial of consumer rights to LASCOPA.

The agency said it remains committed to promoting a fair and competitive marketplace where both businesses and consumers can thrive.
