Lagos Warns of Crackdown on BRT Lane Violators

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has warned of a crackdown on unauthorized use of Bus Rapid Transit lanes, citing a surge in violations by private motorists, security personnel and government vehicles.

In a statement, the agency reaffirmed that only designated BRT buses and vehicles operating under its regulated franchise are permitted to use the dedicated lanes. It said emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks are exempt only when responding to emergencies.

LAMATA said it has observed “a growing and flagrant abuse” of the lanes by unauthorized users, including some military and paramilitary personnel, as well as vehicles operated by local governments and Local Council Development Areas.

The authority said the violations undermine the efficiency and safety of the BRT system, which was designed to provide fast and reliable mass transit for commuters. It added that illegal use contributes to traffic congestion and disrupts scheduled operations.

“The regulations guiding the use of the BRT lane remain in full force and will be strictly enforced,” the agency said, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in line with Lagos traffic laws.

Penalties, according to LAMATA, may include fines, vehicle impoundment and other legal sanctions.

The agency called on all road users, including security agencies and government bodies, to comply with existing rules, stressing that cooperation is key to maintaining an efficient transport system in the state.
