LASEPA Seals 40 Facilities Over Noise Pollution in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed more than 40 facilities across Lagos State for violating noise pollution regulations.

The General Manager of the agency, Babatunde Ajayi, disclosed this over the weekend during an inter-district essay competition for selected secondary schools in Lagos.

Ajayi said the enforcement forms part of sustained efforts by the agency to curb excessive noise across the state, noting that actions have targeted religious centres, entertainment venues, event facilities, and other major sources of noise.

“The noise pollution problem we have in Lagos is something we have keenly addressed over the past few years. We have continued and sustained enforcement across board,” he said.

According to him, over 40 facilities were sealed within the week alone, adding that enforcement has become a routine exercise carried out consistently.

He, however, expressed concern that a small number of facilities continue to violate regulations even after being sanctioned, warning that such establishments risk permanent closure if non-compliance persists.

Ajayi also outlined permissible noise levels across different zones in the state.

He explained that school environments have the lowest allowable levels at about 35 decibels, while residential areas permit 65 decibels during the day and 55 at night.

Mixed-use areas allow slightly higher limits, while commercial zones permit up to 70 decibels during the day. Industrial areas have the highest thresholds, reaching up to 90 decibels during the day.

He urged residents to familiarise themselves with these limits and comply with environmental regulations to reduce noise pollution.

Also speaking, the Head of the Noise Control Unit at LASEPA, Abosede Natufe, encouraged participating students to act as advocates for noise awareness.

She said the competition was designed to deepen understanding of noise regulation and inspire students to promote responsible behaviour in their communities.

Meanwhile, the winner of the 2026 International Noise Awareness Day competition, Ayodele Oluwanifemi of Alimosho Senior Grammar School, called for stricter enforcement of noise pollution laws nationwide.

The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring compliance with environmental standards as part of efforts to create a healthier and more liveable environment in Lagos.
