Pope Leo XIV has warned that weapons and military build-ups cannot bring lasting peace, describing global peace as both a political goal and a moral obligation.
Speaking before the Spanish Parliament on Monday, the pontiff urged nations to embrace dialogue over rearmament amid growing international tensions.
“Peace emerges as a political aspiration and, even more so, as a true moral imperative,” Pope Leo XIV said during his address.
The Pope stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through patient engagement and diplomacy rather than the use of force.
“Weapons may impose a temporary silence, but they can never build a genuine and lasting peace,” he said.
Leo XIV is on a six-day visit to Spain, which runs from June 6 to June 12. His itinerary includes stops in Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands, where he is expected to meet migrants and organizations supporting vulnerable communities.
The Pope's remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and increased defence spending debates across Europe and other regions.
