LASTMA Records 69 Deaths, 246 Injuries in Lagos Road Crashes in Q1 2026

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has revealed that no fewer than 69 people lost their lives in road accidents across Lagos State in the first quarter of 2026.

The agency also disclosed that 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries within the same period, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the disclosure during an interview in Lagos, noting that the authority responded to over 600 accident scenes between January and March.

According to him, the agency intensified enforcement and traffic management operations, resolving more than 900 infractions involving trucks and articulated vehicles.

He added that LASTMA carried out about 4,900 physical enforcement operations, while also recording 17,942 traffic offences through technology-driven systems, including Traffic Management Solution devices.

Bakare-Oki stressed that the agency maintains a zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations, warning that impounded vehicles would be swiftly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.

He noted that efforts are ongoing to improve traffic flow and reduce travel time across the state through enhanced operational strategies and better deployment of equipment.

The LASTMA boss also disclosed that the agency has overhauled its traffic management tools and recovery vehicles, repositioning them strategically to ensure faster response to incidents on major roads.

On capacity building, he said the authority had launched a comprehensive training programme aimed at improving personnel performance.

“We have developed a year-long training calendar and plan to train over 1,000 officers through both internal and external programmes,” Bakare-Oki said.

He added that consultants had been engaged to support specialised training, with more high-level capacity-building initiatives expected to be rolled out in the coming months.

The update comes amid continued efforts by authorities to curb road accidents and improve safety across Lagos roads.
